Jerusalem University College marked the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks with a campus presentation by Dr. Joe Uziel, a JUC professor and archaeologist with the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). Uziel spoke about his involvement in the archaeological recovery efforts conducted in communities affected by the attacks.

Following October 7, the Israeli military enlisted archaeologists to help examine damaged homes, vehicles, and other locations. Skills typically applied to the study of ancient material remains became important in searching through the aftermath of recent destruction.

Uziel was among 30 IAA members who volunteered for the work. Over approximately six months, archaeologists and soldiers sifted through affected areas, recovering human remains and personal belongings, including jewelry and toys. The newsletter reported that the IAA team’s work helped account for those who had been missing.

The presentation offered the campus community an opportunity to hear directly from a scholar involved in this difficult work and to reflect on the continuing grief surrounding the attacks. JUC expressed gratitude to Dr. Uziel and the IAA team and offered prayers for those affected by the events.
