The course will investigate aspects of the Jewish world in Roman Judaea during the final decades of the Second Temple and their contribution to our understanding of the historical Jesus and his message.
Objectives
By the end of the course, a student should be able to:
understand the historical, cultural, linguistic, and archaeological world of the Gospels and its contribution to our understanding of the historical Jesus;
be able to explain the message of Jesus drawing upon its linguistic, historical, and religious setting; and
recognize aspects of Jesus’ teaching (e.g., story parables) within the ancient Jewish world, specifically its pedagogical, theological, and exegetical relevance within the particular culture and time.
