ARCH 5/301 Biblical Archaeology II

Description

A survey of the results of archaeological investigations in the land of the Bible from the Persian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Emphasis is placed upon relating archaeological finds to historical records, including the New Testament.

Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the basic principles and methods of archaeological excavation.
  • Describe common techniques used to date archaeological finds.
  • Identify and differentiate the material culture of major historical periods, including the Persian, Hellenistic, Hasmonean, Early Roman/Herodian, Late Roman, and Byzantine eras.
  • Recognize key archaeological sites from each period and the scholars who excavated them.
  • Compare and contrast the material culture of ancient Israel with that of neighboring civilizations across these time periods.
  • Correlate specific archaeological discoveries with events or items described in literary sources, including the Bible.
