you are planning a special short-term program for your group you may consider
incorporating elements of an Egypt trip into your itinerary such

Qumran: 2 or 3 semester hours (currently not
available) |
| |
Discoveries
in the Dead Sea Scrolls: This 2 week
course, which is offered periodically in July,
reviews the texts and major critical
issues concerning the Dead Sea Scrolls: their origin, their
interpretation of the Old Testament, and their expectation of the
coming Messiah. Students will read and discuss texts in English
translation, although use of Hebrew will be made as appropriate.
The objectives of the
program are to become familiar with the texts from the caves around
Wadi Qumran, to place these documents historically within Second
Temple Judaism and notionally within Josephus’ three philosophies:
the Pharisees, the Sadducees and the Essenes, to investigate the
shape of the Old Testament in the final centuries of the Second
Temple period, to gain an appreciation for the interest in messianic
issues in the last centuries before the advent of Christianity and
to understand more fully the world of both Jesus and the writers of
the New Testament.
Course is taught by Dr. Marty Abegg, Director
of the Dead Sea Scrolls Institute and Chair of the Religious Studies
Department at Trinity Western University |
